AVC Alternative School

AVC is deeply committed to bringing communities togetherto provide high quality services to children, families, and our region

Assabet Valley Collaborative Alternative School

(AVCAS)

Assabet Valley Collaborative Alternative School serves special education students in grades 6-12 whose IEP Teams have identified a need for a separate therapeutic setting. Our students have not been successful in traditional school settings as a result of social/emotional or related disabilities and require a small therapeutic school environment to access and make progress in school. AVCAS strives to reduce the impact of each student’s disability by providing the supports needed to foster our students’ achievement and maintenance of progress.

We believe:

  • That blending clinical, instructional, behavioral and environmental supports cultivates lasting change and better outcomes for students with emotional disabilities.
  • That adolescents are resilient and capable of positive change.
  • That engaging, meaningful instruction reduces the impact of social/emotional difficulties in academic settings.
  • That Community-Based experiences are vital to the long-term success of our students when they leave AVCAS and as adults.
  • That families and students should be connected, engaged, and supported in their community to promote independence and to increase the sustainability of progress.
  • That a structured setting with predictable and meaningful set of incentives and deterrents is a crucial foundation for students with emotional disabilities.
  • That data-driven individualized goal setting and progress monitoring is crucial to progress and decision making.
  • That students make progress when they feel safe, valued, connected to adults, engaged in activities, and adequately challenged.

Our beliefs guide the work we do in all of our domains – from Behavior Management, to Instructional Services, to Clinical Services.
